American Cookie Tour
On the Road

We're heading into cookie season!
You might be thinking about the Thanksgiving menu and wondering who is bringing sweet potatoes, but in an instant, another holiday season will be upon us.
And if you're curious about the history of cookies in America and what a recipe can tell you about our country's history, then do I have a book for you! Or if you need a creativity infusion, some new recipes for your cookie platter or upcoming cookie swap, my book, American Cookie, is filled with delicious ideas.

And come see me when I am on tour and taste the cookies for yourself! Here are some of the events where I will be appearing this season. You can check out the full list of cities I'm visiting on tour here.

Metropolitan Cooking & Entertaining Show Sunday, Dec. 2 in Washington, DC: A huge and exciting show in our nation's capital. The day before I appear at the Smithsonian's American History Museum and later at One More Page Books in Arlington, VA. At this Sunday DC Metro Cooking show I will be making the original Girl Scout Cookies. Before Trefoils, cookies were baked in the home, and Girl Scouts sold them to raise money for camp. These cookies are perfect for the holidays - crisp, buttery, and nostalgic. Come see me, and come taste and experience history.

Atlanta History Center: I am super-excited to announce that on Wednesday, Nov. 28, I will be in at the old and historic Margaret Mitchell House in Atlanta's Midtown neighborhood in conversation with Holly Frey of the so-so popular history podcast, Stuff You Missed in History Class. We'll talk old cookies, quirky cookies, benne seeds, tavern biscuits, icebox cookies, ginger, tea cakes and political rallies, and pretty much whatever is on Holly's mind and what you are curious about. There will be cookies and cocktails, so you don't want to miss this! Here is a link to the podcast on American Cookie that I did with the co-hosts of Stuff You Missed in History Class earlier this fall.
Easy Holiday Cake
that Begins with a Mix

Everyone loves the flavor of pumpkin and spices around the holidays. Here is one of my favorite pumpkin cakes that begins with my natural yellow cake mix. You add the spices, eggs, and liquid, bake in a 13-by 9-inch pan and glaze while warm. Everyone gobbles up these pumpkin bars, and they freeze well, too!
Pumpkin Spice Bars

Makes 24 servings
Prep: 10 minutes
Bake: About 30 minutes

1 package (18.25 ounces) Cake Mix Doctor Simply Yellow mix
1 tablespoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon allspice
1/4 teaspoon ginger
1 cup canned pumpkin
2 large eggs
2/3 cup apple cider
1/3 cup vegetable oil

1) Place a rack in the center of the oven, and preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly grease and flour a 13-by 9-inch pan and set aside.

2) Place the cake mix, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and ginger in a large bowl and whisk to combine. Add the pumpkin, eggs, cider, and oil. Blend with an electric mixer on low until just combined, about 1 to 2 minutes. Turn into the prepared pan. Place the pan in the oven.

3) Bake until the cake springs back and tests done, about 30 minutes. Remove the pan from the oven, and prepare the glaze. Glaze the cake while warm and let it rest 1 hour before slicing.

Glaze: Place 2 tablespoons soft butter, 2 ounces soft cream cheese and 1 teaspoon vanilla in a bowl and blend until smooth. Add 2 cups powdered sugar and beat until creamy.
