Bake American History through Cake

Chances are you have a July 4 tradition - fireworks, barbecue, beach time, watermelon, parade - some constant that occurs every year over this holiday weekend. Baking a cake that suits our nation's birthday celebration is a bit of a challenge, however. The cupcakes with red, white, and blue sprinkles and the strawberry and blueberry decked flag cake you see everywhere at July 4 picnics are modern-day patriotic cakes. But if you want to dig a bit deeper, bake something with a little history to it, then well, you really don't need to go any further than your family's recipe box.

Fast Summer Side: Arugula and Watermelon Salad

In my summer garden, arugula has proven to be the hard-working salad green. And we love the convenience of dashing out to cut fresh arugula to rinse and whiz until dry in the salad spinner. Top it with balls of fresh watermelon - red and yellow - as well as cucumbers, fresh mint, and feta. Drizzle your favorite vinaigrette on top. Add grilled chicken, and this makes a meal!
